Contributions and opt-outs - video transcript

Hello, I’m Shabana and I work at NEST.

Your staging date has arrived. You’ve enrolled any eligible workers. What’s next?

From here on, you’ll need to:

  • Make contributions every pay period, and
  • Deal with opt-outs on an ongoing basis

You use a contribution schedule to make contributions to NEST.

We automatically create a blank schedule for you, and as you enrol workers we’ll add them to it.

There are certain fields you need to fill out, such as the value of the employer and worker contributions you’re sending us.

You also use the schedule to tell us if there’s a pause, change or stop in contributions.

For example, if a worker doesn’t earn enough to qualify for a contribution you’ll need to put £0 in the employer and worker contribution fields, and tell us why you’re not making a contribution.

You can send us a contribution schedule in three ways:

  • through your online account
  • by sending a file through your online account
  • by sending a file using secure file transfer protocol

There’s more information on our website.

Once enrolled, members who you make a contribution for and who decide they don’t want to use NEST can opt out. They can only do this during their opt-out period.

This starts three working days after the member is enrolled, to give them time for our welcome pack to arrive in the post, and ends one month later.

Members can’t opt out after the opt-out period ends, but they can stop contributing to NEST whenever they want.

There are three ways a member can opt out:

1. by visiting our website

2. using our automated telephone system

3. Or through their employer.

Most people choose to opt out online or over the phone because it’s quicker and easier. We deal with these types of opt-out, so you don’t have to worry about them.

If a member wants to opt out through their employer, they need to request a paper opt-out notification form from us.

After we’ve sent them the form they fill it out and give it to you. And you let us know in a contribution schedule.
