Your pension in action

Your Nest pension savings are invested around the world, from electric ferries in Scandinavia and solar energy in Australia through to businesses here in the UK. This puts your money to work, helping to grow your pension savings.

Investing close to home

We believe that investing in the UK is important. In fact, as of June 2024, we have more than £8.5bn invested here. But it's not just about buying shares and bonds listed on stock exchanges. We want to help younger businesses to grow, in turn creating more jobs and opportunities that we can all benefit from.

That’s why we’ve partnered with expert fund managers like Octopus Energy Generation, specialists in the clean energy transition, to invest in exciting opportunities with companies like Deep Green. It’s a pioneering technology-driven business that gives the excess heat from data centres to lesiure centres and swimming pools for free. This helps lesiure centres become more commercially viable by reducing heating costs. Recycling heat in this way also slashes carbon emissions.

With our investment in Deep Green, it's now rolling out this ground-breaking technology which could help keep your local swimming pool open and energy efficient – all at the same time as growing your pension. It’s a win-win.

Take a look at some of the other places you’re investing in around the UK.

Delivering goods to your door

1. Forth ports

Forth ports is the third largest port operator here in the UK running 8 sites. They employ over 1,100 people and play a huge part in getting goods to your door safely. They also believe in their people, equipping them with the skills and qualifications they need to develop. They’ve recently established an academy at the Port of Tilbury and a Skills and Business Centre in Scotland.

Delivering green energy to your home

2. Hornsea 1 windfarm

Located off the Lincolnshire coast in the North Sea, Hornsea 1 generates enough green energy to power over 1 million UK homes. It’s comprised of 174 wind turbines, covering 407 square kilometres. We’re also invested in smaller windfarms closer to the shore, so we took 3 Lincolnshire residents to one Grimsby windfarm to show them exactly where their pension savings go.

3. Pingewood solar farm, Reading

With the help of Octopus Energy, we invested in a solar farm in Reading. A repurposed landfill site, it’s home to 60,000 solar panels covering around the same area as 5 football pitches. The farm generates 15,000MWh of electricity which powers around 5,000 homes.

We invited a few of our members to see this project for themselves. Astra Booth was one of them.

Improving your local community

4. The Dolphin Centre, Poole

In partnership with Legal and General Investment Management (LGIM), we recently invested in a local shopping and community area in Poole, Dorset. By removing rents and business rates for 2 years, 10 local retailers received the support they needed to open their businesses, creating more jobs and a vibrant area for locals to enjoy.

5. India building, Liverpool

Our investment has helped restore this Grade II listed building after being damaged in World War II. It’s now considered one of Liverpool’s heritage assets, hosting shops, offices, and historic artefacts. It’s a boost for the local economy.
